What
does the Wellington Sketchers group do?
We are a Wellington sketch group, formed as a
way for people to get together and have fun drawing, sketching, or painting our city and the
wider region.
Basically, we meet at different locations (see the blog for details) and draw/paint what we see around us. Meetups happen at locations around Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Porirua, and sometimes further afield, like the Wairarapa and Kapiti. Sketch with the group, or on your own, whatever suits you. Afterwards, we meet at a nearby cafe. It is great to see what everyone has drawn or painted, but you don't have to show people your work if you don't want to! Artists of all levels are welcomed in the group.

We sometimes run virtual meetups, usually on a theme, for people who can't get out to the on-location sketching meetups. We also highlight some of the great sketching competitions and movements that are going on in the international online sketching community.
This group was inspired by UrbanSketchers, an international organisation that gathers people to draw and tell the visual stories they observe on location. We aim to show our world, one drawing at a time.
Who is
the group for?
People
who simply want to get out and draw more! We welcome adults of all
abilities and all skill levels, from newcomers, amateurs, and people
sketching for fun, to professional artists. Travelling sketchers passing through Wellington are welcome to come and sketch with us too while they are in town.
Why
sketch in a group?
Sketching
in a group gives people a chance to meet other sketchers, ask
questions, and get hints and ideas, and try new media and techniques. It can be a tad daunting sketching on your own in public. And it is more fun, of course! But if you prefer to
sketch on your own and just meet up with the group in the cafe
afterwards, then that is fine too.
We hope you will actively participate in the group. Feel free to suggest possible locations for sketching meetups. We would love it if you post photos of your work in our flickr group or allow us to put photos of your work here on this site. If you know of upcoming events or classes that should be posted on the blog, or if you want to run a sketching meetup, email us at Wellington.Sketchers at gmail.com.
Do you
run courses or classes?
No, we are just a casual group of sketchers sketching together. You may
find that you pick up hints and ideas from other sketchers though. If you are interested in painting, drawing, sketching, or life drawing classes, check out one of the local art schools:
The Learning Connexion, Lower Hutt
Hutt Art, Lower Hutt
Inverlochy School of Art, Wellington
Community Education College, Wellington and Onslow
If you know of other local art schools or classes which we can add to this list, please email
us. We would like to promote our local art community. We are happy to advertise upcoming sketching/drawing/painting classes, so get in touch with us by email if you wish to do so.
When starting up, we received lots of advice and support from neighbouring NZ and international sketching groups. If you are starting up a sketching group in your city, we would be happy to pass on to you the advice we got and anything we learnt about setting up a sketching group. Email us!
